Stunning and at a good priceJuly 10, 2010 Stimpson 45 out of 49 found this review helpful
For me the 3750 was the perfect balance between features and price. I really wasn't interested in the extra bells and whistles of the higher priced 3700 units so I was thrilled when I found this one. I'm upgrading from a Nuvi 250 and the difference is a quantum leap. This is just a stunning device. It's got a huge, beautiful display. The 3D display zooms in and out smoothly. It makes my old 250 look beyond primitive. I was also shocked at how light and thin it is. The biggest improvement is that the charging is done from the base, which means no more unplugging/plugging the cable when you want to take the unit with you. You simply pop it out of the base and you're done. There are tons of interface improvements. My favorite is that you can easily find out your latitude and longitude, nearest address, nearest intersection, as well as the nearest location of emergency services. I've always found the interface on Garmin units to be vastly superior to other competitors. I am thrilled with my purchase.
3750 ImpressionsJuly 15, 2010 Byron Walter(Stow, OH United States) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
First off is that the small screen on the 3750 is easy to see on a sunny day. I can actually read the text and see the maps. This certainly wasn't the case with my four year old Nuvi 350. And the flat form factor makes it easy to drop into one's pocket. These two points alone make this a significant upgrade from my geriatric 350. Also there's a speaker with decent volume built into the windshield mount to take over from the itty bitty 3750 speaker.
And they kept Aussie Karen as my voice from beyond.
Now some points based on cruising around my stomping ground... The 3750 seems to like to route me a little to the right of the most direct routes. During a recent test run the unit sent me nearly a mile out of my way on a seven mile jaunt. Well it would have been seven miles but the Nuvi sent me eight miles. Was it trying to avoid traffic lights? Beats me but the trip took about seven minutes longer. My old 350 never went rogue with route calculations (well there was that forestry road once).
Another point is that the 3750 is supposed to run for up to four hours on its internal battery. Even with the back light set at 10%, I'm getting way less than that.
Also Garmin doesn't even include a cheap vinyl carry case. I picked up a five dollar Tom Tom case that provides a nice "loose" fit.
The only manual with my Nuvi was a quick start micro booklet that pretty much will leave you to your own devices for figuring things out. Fortunately most functions are self-explanatory.
Garmin did include a disk that's smooth on one side and sticky on the other. This allows me to mount the unit in an unused portion of my car's info screen and keep the GPS outta sight of anyone with itchy fingers (and no, I don't leave it mounted unattended by me).
Anyhow I do like the unit but wonder if its routing software might be in need of a little tweaking.
thoughts on a week-old unitAugust 23, 2010 Raleigh Reviewer 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the first GPS unit that I have owned. I have used a very old Garmin in the past briefly, so that is the only comparison that I have.
I initially wanted the 3760 for the lifetime traffic, but I've read how unreliable that it is and that you have to deal with advertisements on the screen - nothing is "free", remember. Anyway, I settled on the 3750 because of the above concerns and it fit my price range better.
After a week of ownership, I am posting my thoughts. I'll update this review if anything changes.
Pros:
- Very intuitive menus. Even a caveman can operate it.
Cons:
- The built in speaker is weak, but it gets slightly better (louder) when using the Garmin mount that has it's own built in speaker. Then again, I've got the volume at 100% just so that I can hear the voice on a hot summer day in my car with the a/c fan crankin'.
- The touch screen can be too sensitive at times. At others, I have to "mash" my finger into the screen in order to get the display to accept a change in function. Sometimes, I can see the button on the screen "flash" as if it has registered the push of the button, but nothing happens until I hit it again. It makes me wonder if I should return this. I am thinking that a clear cover on top of the screen would make the touch feature less sensitive even though it would protect the screen. I'll take my chances.
- This unit is fragile. It could easily slip out of your hand and break. I found a great semi-rigid case that fits perfectly, it's the Lowepro Volta 30.
- Battery life when the screen is on is about one hour. I was disappointed with that. I think that there is a way to turn off the screen when running on internal battery power, it may even be automatic, but my screen never shut off. Maybe that happens in pedestrian mode?
Ideas for improvement:
I'm not sure what the higher end models do with the Bluetooth connectivity, but I'd love for this GPS to broadcast into my Bluetooth earpiece so that the GPS "voice" doesn't disturb anyone else in the car if they might be sleeping. Does anyone know if the other Garmin models do this?
It would also be cool to hear the voice interrupt my radio so that I could listen to music and then hear the GPS directions as they are spoken.
