5 out of 5 stars Garmin 885T Still lives   April 18, 2010

I reviewed many GPS units to become my first GPS. Within my price range, the 885T was the best. I bought a refurbished unit from Amazon. I see the price went back up, too. I got a bargain! Although, I saw right after I bought it that Garmin discontinued it. Oh, well. They included the 2010 maps and nine months of the MSN, which isn't in my area anyway.

The unit has performed many functions perfectly:

1. As a GPS, it senses and locks to satellites quickly. The 2010 maps are not completely perfect, on back country roads, and new intersections, but I was able to run the length of the New Jersey Turnpike and it directed me to the best route, with images of upcoming lane changes. That was cool.

2. As a bluetooth device, it said my LG phone was not certified for use, but it connected anyway. It reads the contacts, dials and answers calls. Once in while it will forget to connect to the phone, and I will have to delete it and try to reconnect, with minor irritation. When it is connected, all phone calls come through the 885T, hands-free. Very cool.

3. As a music player, I can load music and books and listen through the FM radio. It worked, but I would rather use my iPod. Technology is always advancing.

4. Games? It has them, but I am not sure why. Should I be playing solitaire while I drive??

5. Walking: I used it on the streets of New York, and it found a clothing store I wanted to see. And a restaurant we wanted to find. It is a great little database to carry around. But, so is an iPhone, if you have one. The 885T is cheaper.

6. The remote button that attaches to the steering was not mentioned in the description. It came as a pleasant surprise that I can press the button and talk to the 885T. The other surprise was, it did not require "training". If I speak clearly, simple words on the screen, or the pre-programmed shortcuts, it knows what I am saying. It even can interpret spoken names of stores or restaurants. That is cool.

I love it. The English female voice is the easiest to understand. And the most charming.

In a year or two, I may need to next generation of GPS, but until then, this is the best.

Note: the feature of reading Google Maps and loading the location into the unit is awesome. However, you need to be careful that the address is correct on the map. Often, I found, the place I found and loaded was not exactly where it really was. That was the fault of Google maps interpretation of data, rather than the 885T. The 885T took me to within feet of where Google told me to go, but it was at times a quarter of a mile off. The solution was to use the satellite view in Google maps to make absolutely sure I was finding the right location.

Overall I am very happy with this GPS and use it on every trip but might try a different model next time in the hope of finding something a bit more robust.

System - It seems a little flaky - very rarely it freezes. More often when I power on it either skips the security code (which I set - but maybe it thinks I am in my home location as it is nearby to the house) or it sometimes appears to do a fresh reboot requiring an "Agree" response and defaulting back to English language spoken commands.
(I did update the software when I got it and there are currently no more updates available)

Navigation - The maps are more up-to-date than in the Garmin C340 StreetPilot I had in a hire car but I suspect the latter had a smoother operating system - perhaps a dedicated one rather than something built on Linux as I suspect the OS on more recent Garmin's is (the C340 probably had also not been fully updated on the web). The form factor of the 885 is also much better (slimmer and pocketable) though as a result the built-in speakers are smaller and weaker.
It has some idiosyncrasies when navigating.
When I start off the first (voice) direction (to turn onto a road) often seems to be in the wrong direction. That never gave me any problem - it helps to keep myself from blindly following the GPS instructions. I treat the GPS as a guide rather than the boss. The route planning seems to be programmed to be a bit 'sticky' - if I deviate from the route it selected it will of course tell me how to get back on the route. The ETA will have increased. As I continue to deviate this ETA increases at every 'wrong' turn. After a short while it will probably switch to recommending the route I am actually taking and the ETA will drop down below that of some of it's attempts to navigate me back on the original route.
For a long time I was wondering why the turn to Westheimer from Houston's 610 loop was announced as the exit to "Federated States and Micronesia...". Then I realized the road's alternative name is FM1096. FM is an abbreviation for Farm to Market...not the more exotic explanation offered by the GPS.

I find the speed limit and current speed displays (in the corner of the map view) to be very useful and rely on them as much as the speedometer.

The estimated arrival time seems accurate for freeway use but here in Houston it seems to increase by 1 min at every set of traffic lights I get caught by - so it does not fully account for such delays.

Positional accuracy - seems very good. Sometimes when you are on the feeder lanes it thinks you are on the freeway and so the indicated speed limit may be incorrect - but that is usually obvious. In any case that is probably true of all GPS units. It gets a satellite lock as fast or faster than any other GPS I have used.

Mounting - the suction cup works well on my windscreen. It falls off less than once per month - usually when parked in the sun. If I was smart I would preempt this by re-applying it from time to time.
I take the GPS out each time I park the car in a public place - putting the device back into the cradle seemed a bit awkward at first because of trouble finding the position at which it clicks in - but I have got better at it.

Audio output - Of course I wanted to integrate it with the car audio for best sound quality. The feature to broadcast to a spare FM radio channel did not work that well due to crowded spectrum and the weak FM signal that the device transmits (widely reported elsewhere). I guess my car's aerial is in the back screen. I gave up and use a 3.5mm minijack audio cable to plug it directly into the Aux input. That is one more connection to make every time I put it back in the cradle but I have learned to do it pretty quickly and easily.

MP3 Player - I uploaded a bunch of MP3 files and it is working fine as an MP3 player in repeat-shuffle mode. The volume of the MP3 files is not all the same. As far as I can see there is no way to automatically compensate for that (I doubt other MP3 players have that capability either - I had hoped that playlists could support volume information).

Spoken navigation - Once I got to try the different voices I realized that there is a big difference between the voices which speak basic navigation directions only and those that can speak the road names. The former are natural sounding recordings of human voices. It would not be possible to have recordings of all the road names in the map area so those voices use good quality 'robot' voices but unfortunately they frequently mispronounce road names - I presume the road name database does not include any phonetic clues, and the pronunciation of English cannot be easily determined from spelling alone.
(I do like to play with other languages, some of which can be downloaded to expand the available list - for instance, sometimes setting the GPS to speak in Chinese or Portuguese)

Voice recognition - I didn't expect it to be useful but I was wrong and I use it quite a lot.
With the GPS mounted on the windscreen do not expect it to work in rain due to the background noise.

MSN Direct traffic information - The 'T' in the model number indicates this GPS supports the MSN Direct traffic (and other) information services. I find them useful.
However, shortly after buying the device it was announced that the service is being discontinued in 01-Jan-2012. That may help explain the hefty price discounts. That is still nearly two years away and I think by then I will be ready to switch to something else.
One annoying thing is that the traffic information can only be retrieved while the device is connected to the power cable. That means as you walk to your car you cannot retrieve the traffic information - you have to put it into the cradle and then take your time coming out of the car park for enough traffic information to download to choose the optimum route home.
Also be aware the MSN Direct service only works around the cities where they have a FM transmitter and only shows traffic speeds on the major roads.

The main other MSN Direct service I use is the gas prices which shows the prices at the different gas stations in the vicinity. I also use the three day weather forecast.

I haven't tried using it as a Bluetooth hands-free device for my phone because of corporate regulations against phone use during driving.

Security code - I enabled the option to require a security code on power-on. It is a bit of a nuisance to enter the four digits each time I get in the car. It cannot use the voice recognition for this and the touch-screen presses seem a bit unresponsive. Sometimes it beeps as if I keyed a digit but the associated asterisk does not appear - if I don't notice and press "Done" with only three digits entered it makes me wait a while before I can try again. Probably I should disable the security code. In general the keyboard seems a little unresponsive - e.g. when entering addresses. Faster feedback of a successful 'key' press would be an improvement.

I have concentrated more on the perceived limitations than the strengths - It is a nicely finished and effective GPS unit.

This is my second Garmin. I also own the nuvi255. For navigation, there's no difference. Was disappointed that my phone was not compatible with the bluetooth. You should go to the [...] website to see if your phone will work. Also, the voice recog does not work that well. Unit worked fine after I downloaded the new maps from [...]. Unit arrived quickly from seller. I recognized that the initial software was causing response delays. That cleared up with the new download.

I recently bought my Garmin 885t GPS. I am very satisfied with it over-all. It is very easy to use, setup and the voice control really makes this GPS unique above all others. Garmin is bringing out the replacement for this model, 3750T due out later this summer for way more than I paid on Amazon for my 885T GPS. The 3750T will have the voice control and bluetooth. As with everthing, you have to shop around to find the best price and deal. Even on Amazon, check often as price points change for the same product are common. I did this and found a superior price at the time I ordered (checked the next the day, the price point increased $90.00 dollars).

Garmin will honor warranties if you purchase your GPS on/from Amazon. EBAY purchases; warranties are NOT honored.

I have just returned from a long driving trip, I discovered more features and controls while using this GPS. Having business addresses and phone numbers in towns I visited was very useful. The ability to look up a business phone number and use voice control to directly call the location was extremely helpful (via blue tooth with my cell phone). Of course the GPS aspect really was helpfull even on Forest roads to know where your going.

I traveled on Interstate Hwys, State Hwys, County Roads, and finally Forest Roads (dirt) and the GPS always knew the road 99.99 % and all of the side roads with superior accuracy. I did update the maps (one free from Garmin) before my trip to get the very latest maps. Speed limit posting on the GPS was accurate and useful.
Overall accuracy in all respects is superior.

The only weak point for this GPS is the FM transmitter which allows you to tune your GPS and Car radio to the same FM freq. to hear the spoken voice, phone calls etc, thru you car sound system. I tested this feature, found the signal between the GPS and my car radio had noise levels which were unacceptable. Will test again.

Finally, the MSN service will end 1/1/2012, but Garmin has a replacement car adaptor you can purchase for the 885T which brings in the new service (free) Garmin is providing for traffic and services similar to the MSN service. So it is up-ward compatable with the new Garmin service. This adaptor replaces the car adaptor and sell for around $50.00ish dollars. I will decide on this option later.

I would recommend this "flag ship" GPS to anyone, obviously voice control is expensive, but I believe it make this unit more safe to use on the road. Enjoy!! BTW, Garmin is a leader in GPS products, I also have a hand held GPS I've had for years, again same experience wt the Etrex Legend unit.
