Amazon.com Product Description This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like new conditions. Some GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes.
Garmin's nüvi 265T improves upon its 200-series predecessors by adding free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device) as well as Bluetooth connectivity to your cell phone. Other significant improvements in the 2x5 series include a predictive technology that provides faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more information, terrain maps, and an exciting new photo navigation feature. The 265T provides complete maps for North America and the handy Text-to-Speech feature, so you get turn-by-turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. "turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way", rather than merely "turn left in 50 feet").
The nüvi 2x5 models all sport the slim design that Garmin introduced with the 200-series last year, so they all fit comfortably in your pocket or purse, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that makes them convenient for navigation by car or foot. All of the models include useful travel tools like a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more.
Important Product Information: This device features a "screen lock" feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2x5 and 7x5 Garmin units. If you slide the "Power" key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the "Power" key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for "Pedestrian" mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. For more information, see page 5 of the product manual.
Integrated Traffic Receiver
Steer clear of traffic with an integrated GTM 20 FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. No subscriptions or additional hardware needed. Just open the box, turn it on, and get instant access to traffic information--the traffic updates are free for the life of the device.
All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.
In most areas, the traffic broadcasts are continuous--there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.
Hands-Free Calling
In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. WIth Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker, you can match your nüvi to any Bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone's call history log.
Key Features/Benefits for all 2x5 Series Navigators
One of Garmin's key product philosophies is to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box, and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin's portable navigation devices.
Garmin's interface is a key to their success part of what makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and smooth map updates as you navigate.
This year, Garmin has redesigned its interface to include much more useful information.
Your GPS device locks onto transmissions from a dedicated network of Satellites in order to determine its position. Until the device gets a "lock" on three satellites, it can't effectively navigate, so decreasing the time it takes for your device to get "satellite lock" is always a goal of GPS manufacturers. With Garmin's new HotFix technology, your Garmin GPS remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. This gives the device an idea of where it should look for satellites, and dramatically decreases the time it takes for your Garmin to get its position and start navigating. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Can't get better options for the price!July 21, 2009 David H. Christiansen 32 out of 32 found this review helpful
Researched my GPS purchase for 2 weeks and couldn't find a better deal than this one! The 265T has lifetime traffic (the ads are super small so they don't distract), bluetooth that works great with my cell phone, text-to-speech for all streets AND has a voice dial feature I didn't even know about! Received promptly and Garmin support was excellent when I called to get my free map update. You can get 1 free update, but you must provide them with Amazon proof of purchase because it's factory refurbished.
Save $ with the refurbished unitOctober 30, 2009 wise1owl 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought the refurbished unit from Newegg and have used it for about 1 month. It replaces my Garmin Nuvi 350 due to getting several new features for little more than the cost of upgrading the maps. Mine came with the newest map set so no upgrade was needed. It boots up very quickly (especially compared to my old 350 and is usually ready to go in seconds instead of minutes. The free lifetime subscription for Nav-Tech FM traffic worked right out of the box, no fuss, no muss, no bother. I even use it every day for my 50 mile round trip to and from work simply to get current traffic for the rush hour trip once I get about 5 miles from the house (I live in the hinterlands of metro Atlanta). If you want to check it on a map, it has been consistently and accurately reporting traffic slow downs and stoppages from Atlanta GA to beyond Lawrenceville on HWY 316, covering a far larger area than I ever expected.
On The downside,I miss the truck and bus option for routing that I had with my old Nuvi 350 and the voices aren't as refined/clear as they were on my 350.
Bear in mind that all maps are outdated, including the ones you pick up at the welcome center/rest area when you enter a state on a major route. That said, the 265T maps were more current than I expected
Pros
Updated maps
Free lifetime FM traffic subscription
In spite of being free, the FM traffic works well in the larger metropolitan areas that I have used it.
Maps include US, Canada, & Puerto Rico (I travel all three). Maps on other systems are often for the 48 states and maybe a few miles into Canada.
Compact, easily fits into your pocket.
The windshield mount is less bulky than my old 350.
Cons
I miss my old truck/bus route option when towing my travel trailer.
Alternative voices are not as clear as they were on the 350.
The unit did not include a case/holster to protect it when in your pocket or purse. I bought a small camera case at Wally world for it.
Future map updates are expensive but I can't complain since I know that going in. For the difference in price, I'll probably continue to buy a new/refurbished unit every 2-3 years innstead of paying for updates.
Great ChoiceOctober 1, 2009 Dirk R. Luckett(Dallas, TX USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I ordered a refurbished model and cannot tell it from a new one. I debated getting the wide version but went with the cost savings of the 3.5 inch refurbished model. I have found it very intuitive to figure out; love the touch screen; I ordered a carrying case and AC charger which are great as well. I got one map update for free within 60 days so I have an alarm set in my phone to remind me a week before. Shipped on time and arrived as expected.
Best value - for nowJanuary 14, 2010 T. Brzinski(Philly PA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you need a stand-alone GPS, this one is great. I've now used similarly specced TomToms and Magellans as well as an older Nuvi 350. This one's a great value, works as well as (and in some ways better than) the 350, and I found Garmin to be much more reliable and easy to follow than the other two manufacturers. That said, it seems as though the future of gps navigation is moving towards dashboard and phone integration, and I suspect we'll be seeing some substantial improvements in gps technology as those markets continue to grow.
If you can hold out till your next cell phone or car purchase, it's probably worth the wait. If you need a gps now I'd say get the best deal you can on a 2XX series garmin (like this one), but don't fret over the features - there's very little difference in functionality between the $600 units and those you can find for under $200. If you really want/need your GPS not to be an integrated unit, I'd say the 2XX are still a great deal across the board, but the traffic service may be worth a bit extra if you live somewhere that the FM traffic band is reliable - from my use I can say the traffic features don't help much if all your driving is around Philly, DC, NYC, or Baltimore.
gets me thereOctober 26, 2009 Richard Chatterton(Upstate New York) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I found the nuvi easy to use and accurate in helping me find my way in urban areas unfamiliar to me. I was a bit concerned about purchasing a factory refurbished product, but it has been updated and works perfectly. I would recommend this to anyone.
