New Features -- Where Am I? Where's My Car?
The nüvi 700 series is the first to answer two common questions: "Where am I?" and "Where’s my car?"

At any time, with a single tap of the screen, drivers can display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations. And to help drivers find their car in an unfamiliar spot or vast parking lot, all nüvi 700s automatically mark the position in which they were last removed from the mount.

New Features -- Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about).

A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

See Better, See More
The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

First Rate Map Data
All nüvi 700s come preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin gets its map data from NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping.

Important note about map updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever do need a map update, you can purchase one from Amazon.com at our Garmin Store.

Hands-Free Calling
In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. WIth Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker, you can match your nüvi to any bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone's call history log.

Integrated FM Traffic Receiver
TMC traffic service coverage map
Steer clear of traffic with an integrated FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous — there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

A 3-month subscription to TMC Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network is included with purchase of this device. For more information on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the Garmin website.

5 out of 5 stars GPS Newbie   April 18, 2009

My first GPS, and I couldn't be happier. It fired up fully charged right out of the box W/2009 maps installed. I tested navigation with everyday stops that I am familiar with, and I must say that I was impressed with the accuracy. I did notice that in a few instances, I was on top of the turn before the voice prompt gave instruction. I 'm not too worried about that however, as you can clearly see the visual approach of the turn on the map. The 760 is packed with features, and is very easy to operate. Bluetooth works great! The 760 immediately synched with my Motorola Q, and imported my phone list. I have an aux jack in my Saab 9-5, and the phone sound quality is incredible through the car speakers. I made various calls while traveling on the freeway, and no one reported hearing any echoes. Crystal clear! I picked up an 8gb SD card and loaded pictures of the family and a ton of mp3's. Mp3 sound quality through the aux is equal to that of my iPod. My only complaint about the Mp3 player is that it does not appear as though there is a shuffle feature. Overall, a great unit as indicated by the many other reviews out there. I have purchased refurb electronics before, and for the most part, have had great experiences with them. The money I saved from buying refurb vs. new paid for the SD card and a vent bracket. Being a refurb unit, it came in a plain Garmin box, but inside it was packaged as a new unit would be with all accessories listed.

5 out of 5 stars New to GPS   April 6, 2009

I went with the Refurb to save money on the 760, and very pleased. It looks new to me, everything wrapped and sealed as if it were new. It came with a fully charged batt, and the latest firmware, so it is definetely a refurb - but cosmetically you would never know it. It only takes 20 sec or so to aquire satellites on a cold start. I'm new to this, so take this review for what its worth. I noticed that the newer streets that are in my area are on the nuvi 760. These are new streets (subdivisions) that are a year or 2 old, so I'm happy with the maps that are preloaded on it. The nuvi is very user freindly and intuitive, the touchscreen make it super easy to use.

3 out of 5 stars Incomplete User Interface   October 3, 2009

12 out of 14 found this review helpful

I have been using multiple GPS devices for more than 5 years now. I started with laptop based GPS softwares, then bought TomTom Go 510 4 years ago. I wasn't very happy with TomTom so I decided to purchase Garmin since it has very good reputation as well as international support.

After 1 year of usage, I think I know every detail of this device so that I can review in very detail. Bottom line is it's proven to be serious mistake for me to choose Garmin Device. Here's why.

The advantage of Garmin device is,

1.Accuracy of Map (not POI)
2.Routing Algorithm. Routing is accurate and quick to recalculate.
3.Easy of Use (however, there's flip side)
4.Very good screen (I agree and like it)
5.Solid construction. This device never hung in my daily usage. Sometimes, this device is so hot that I can't even touch it but it worked fine.
6.International Support. If you occasionally travel oversea, support for foreign country will be useful.

Now the down sides.

Starting from Garmin User Interface,

1.Quality of Information.
Garmin's display screen delivers very limited amount of information. So, each piece should be very concise and accurate. At least I expect that. However, Garmin delivers not very useful but annoying information. For example, assuming I drive from San Diego to LAX, it's straight 80 miles drive on I-5, then another 50 miles of I405. Once I get on I5, I will move to 1st or 2nd lane then I will forget the next turn for more than an hour. Other GPS device simply shows me that I can forget next turn for at least 1 hour by showing remaining miles.
On the contrary, Garmin displays remaining miles to major (I don't know what's guideline) ramp and junction, which I don't need to care. If I need to keep left, why I should even bother to care about those. I don't need to do anything. After I first purchased Garmn, I actually changed lane to the last one to be prepared. Now I know I need to ignore when GPS is saying "keep left in next xxx mile". But in one incident, "keep right in next xxx miles" but I didn't need to change or take ramp. I don't know why GPS guided me that way. Under heavy traffic, I was stuck in the last lane, where I didn't need to.
2.Limited Information
This is related to ease of use. Garmin doesn't overflow display screen with information. It shows a few selected information so that driver can easily recognize it. However, every user has different preference. I like to see more information since I can make better decision. However, there's no option to see more. Unlike TomTom, which I can reconfigure every aspect of user interface, Garmin doesn't give me any freedom. So, it's hard to believe easy of use is actually for users. Garmin tried to reduce their R&D cost by simplifying user interface.
3.Map Display
These days GPS devices are turning into wider display, which I doubt usefulness. To me, the road ahead of me is most important. I don't care road behind me. In Garmin, my vehicle is located at 1/3 place from the bottom, which means 2/3 of screen is used to show road ahead of me. Another funny thing is that, the point of next turn or event is located at the top so that, I can barely see the turn but I can't see the result of event. For example, If I need to make left turn (less 90 degree turn), the road after the left turn is not visible until I approach very closely. So, I know there's something but I can't guess what will be the result. This isn't very bad by itself but combined with other drawback.
And display refresh rate is so slow. It's ok to be once every 1 or 2 second in the freeway but I would like to be more frequent when it's approaching downtown since the distance between each turn is so short.
4.Incorrect guide
In Los Angeles, there are more than 10 freeways stretching every direction. It's quite common to move to other freeway. When I approach the ramp, GPS indicates that by saying keep right and take ramp. But the information displayed on the screen (as well as voice prompt) is such as "take the ramp to I605S/605N". It doesn't tell I need to go to south or north until I approach I605 very closely. This is necessary there because the ramp is usually 2 lane and one lane per direction. It's quite usual to see congestion in one lane. Without knowing which direction to go, I better wait in the congested lane. But sometimes, it's very annoying to find out I needed to take the other lane after waiting for 30 min. Since map display (mentioned in #3) doesn't show the result of event, it's hard to find from display. I can control display to zoom out but that needs me to stop the vehicle or I need helper. I contacted Garmin Service for this matter, and their answer was "latest device supports lane assistance". But this is not about lane selection. It's about advance information, which already exist in the device.
5.POI
Unlike TomTom, which shows unlimited number of POI entry, Garmin display only certain number of entires. Then it stops. If I select fast food, which is abundant in downtown area, I can't find any restaurant more than 1 or 2 miles from my current location due to this limitation. Due to this, it's impossible to find certain place without very good clue. Especially people like me with short memory, it's hard to use Garmin's POI. Most of the time, my search result comes out as "no entry". I can't search entire database by pressing down the arrow since it stop display. I can't think of any logical reason why Garmin engineers programmed that way. it's not matter of range. Sometimes, I found one POI entry 6000 miles away from me. (I have Malaysian map installed).
Also, POI searcher is extremely slow. I don't expect it to change search result on the fly but it's not pleasant to wait for several minute to find one restaurant 10 miles away. (search takes longer if destination is far)
6.Voice Prompt
Voice Prompt is clear and correct. It reads Spanish names correctly. However, when voice prompt is being played, screen display stops. Especially in busy street, display is frozen for a few sec sometimes, and misses a few screen update. Due to this I need to concentrate what Garmin is saying and I can't use phone since it will distract me. If display is also updated at the same time, it will assure me what I heard is correct.

And also, there's Garmin 760 specific problem with Traffic Information.

1.After several months of usage, I found out that Traffic information is not really up to date. For example, I was driving on I405 northbound about 7:00 PM on Frday near Irvine. At this time, the road is not usually congested but GPS still shows that there's 50 min delay to LA downtown. Actually, there's no delay. If you turn on traffic avoidance, you will find it very useless. Not only because of outdated information.
Routing algorithm is also not well developed for traffic. There are 2 facts.
Traffic sensors are only in major roads. Though there are traffic conditions everywhere, only major roads appears to be congested. So, Garmin takes route to back roads, which is nothing different but worse.
Most of the time, if Garmin can't find any back roads to use, it may guide you to take ramp. Then go back to freeway. It's because ramp doesn't appear to be congested. It repeats until end of traffic condition. This is really annoying. When I first turned on avoidance and hit the congestion, I thought Garmin really found good alternative route. I moved from 1st lane to last lane, which is not easy under heavy traffic and became furious to find out that the only shortcut was ramp
I contacted Garmin Customer Service for routing algorithm related to traffic avoidance to find out what's the justification for that result. He simply said, turn off traffic avoidance. If I can't use traffic avoidance, what's the point of traffic subscription.

I am ASIC engineer in R&D for more than 15 years. I make many engineering decision every day. Some make sense, some don't. However, I have my own justification for those decisions. Whenever I see new and high tech devices, I like to figure out how it's made and what could be engineering challenge and decision.

From the finding I described, I think that Garmin engineers built a device which looks good and attractive but lacks real world experience. So far, the drawbacks are not technically challenging and looks minor but greatly limiting usability. It might be hard to find it bad unless they serious use in the view of regular customer. They may lacks critical reviewer or engineers are full of pride achieving great routing algorithm and doesn't like to listen to small matters like this.

I contacted Garmin service regarding above matter and wanted to contribute to make better product, reply was very disappointing.

Anyway, my experience with Garmin turned out to be disappointing and I am planning to purchase another one, mostly TomTom.

5 out of 5 stars Buy It!   February 26, 2009

I bought a refurbished unit from Best Buy online about 2 months ago. However, I paid $250 and I thought it was a good deal then. When it arrived I expected to find it, well, used but in good condition. To my surprise, it was no different than brand new. I even inspected it with a magnifying glass and could find absolutely no signs of it being used before. Anyway, it works flawlessly. No problems, everything works, I have tried all the features such as bluetooth to connect to my cell phone, works great, fm transmitter, works great, media player, I am thinking of buying two more for Christmas presents next year. Of course, you never know what you are going to get when refurbished but so far, i have no regrets. Good Luck

4 out of 5 stars Great unit, difficult to use   April 10, 2009

My refurbished Garmin Nuvi 760 has been in use for about a month. The unit arrived in new condition. It was perfect with no signs that it wasn't a new item. Garmin allows access to updated maps for 60 days on refurbished units so I didn't run into the problems associated with some other refurbs. The download was difficult until I discovered you can't download to Google Chrome browser. a quick reload of Windows Explorer solved my problem. I have not been succesful using the Bluetooth feature. I have it set up but thus far have not been able to get it to function properly. Overall I am satisfied and would encourge others to take advantage of the low refurb price.
